This is the largest Catholic Cathedral in the world and was built by the former president in order to bring money to his home village.

Easter Monday at the Outdoor Laundry Mat near the Banko Forest. 270 men and 20 women each collect laundry from families throughout Abidjan and wash it here in the Banko River 363 days a year. For each day of washing, a person earns 10,000 CFA (approx. $16.60)

This is the soap factoory near the Banko River. Here three different kinds of soap are made out of coconuts, cocoa beans, and palm oil. Each variety of soap has a different strength and purpose so, each washer needs to purchase one brick of each soap from the ladies who run the factory.

Each launderer must supply his/her own tire which gets permanently secured in his/her section of the river. The washing is done on this tire against the stones which are secured in the centerof the tire. The launderers only have two days off a year.

After being washed, the clothes are carried to a designated place for each washer where they are spread out on the grass to dry in the sun ... often very close to the expressway
